Assistant Buyer

Position Overview:

Operating within our busy Purchasing team you will be responsible for the procurement of raw materials and packaging goods for our production facilities. Working closely with the Head of Buying, you will have accountability for sourcing new ingredients, supplier negotiation, purchasing and reporting, to ensure both price competitiveness and the fulfilling the availability of supply. Your relationship building skills will be utilised as you strive to achieve results with both suppliers and internal departments.



The location of the role is within our modern head office, alongside its Distribution Centre located on Whitebirk Industrial Estate, Blackburn.

  • Purchasing of raw materials including animal proteins and ingredients.
  • Buying of packaging materials which include flexible films, labels & board products.
  • Liaising with suppliers, being effective in the negotiation of costs to ensure price competitiveness of supply.
  • Benchmarking of prospective vendors and price comparison against existing approved vendors.
  • Work closely with the Stock Controller and Production Planner to ensure the availability of materials for production schedules.
  • Communicating with suppliers to agree delivery schedules and checking order progress to ensure that they are maintained.
  • In conjunction with Head of Buying, identify and explore any potential cost saving opportunities.
  • Monthly reporting of raw material and packaging costs, trends and market information.
  • Investigation and following through of complaints associated with raw materials and packaging.
  • Collate vendor and material information to maintain our database of raw material and packaging items specifications
  • Dealing with invoice queries relating to raw material & packaging.
  • Assisting with regular stock takes and stock investigation.

Key attributes and skills:


  • Able to interpret numerical data, form conclusions and make quick decisions based on this.
  • Good relationship building skills both verbally and written; confident in dealing with a diverse range of people.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Adaptable and flexible, and with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office applications, skills in Excel are of particular importance
  • Ability to work as part of a team and the ability to work individually.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience within a procurement environment
  • Eligibility to work in the UK on a permanent basis.
  • Must be fluent in English.
  • Polite, courteous and well presented.
  • Full UK and clean driving licence is preferred.


The package on offer comprises of a competitive salary based on experience. 

Core working hours are 37.5 hours per week, however due to the nature of the role some out of hours working will be required.


Mobility Requirements:

The role is office based, however there will be a requirement to regularly visit the warehouse and production sites to fulfil accountabilities. It may also be necessary to conduct supplier site visits on occasions
