Category Manager, Blackburn

Position Overview:

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Category Manager to join an exciting FMCG Pet Food & Accessories business.

The Category manager will work within the Pets Choice Category & Insights team, reporting to the Head of Category. You will be seen as an expert on category, shopper & consumer data, developing category strategies and executing these with chosen retail partners. 

The ideal candidate will be ambitious, driven and looking to take their category management career to the next level. It's essential you have some category management experience working for an FMCG manufacturer and the ability to manage retailer relationships.


The location of the role will be flexible with access to our head office in Blackburn, and will require frequent travel to customer meetings at Retailer UK Head offices.

Core Responsibilities of the Category Manager:

  • Build strong and lasting relationships with internal and external stake holders eg customer and supplier contacts
  • The ability to segment analysis by customer, brand, category, channel to understand and drive category performance
  • Working with continuous (eg Kantar, Nielsen, IRI, Nectar loyalty) or adhoc market and consumer data and to put the "Customer First" to identify opportunities for the business and retailers
  • Create, develop and drive Category Management service within specific customer to increase sales and achieve customer business targets
  • Create and execute insight lead customer initiatives to grow Category and Pets Choice
  • Manage product portfolio within customer to grow distribution to drive category and Pets Choice sales (NPD and tail management)
  • Plan, lead internally and execute range updates and range reviews in line with Pets Choice and customer objectives
  • Lead and execute the Channel strategy with relevant customers, focused on range priorities, distribution, NPD listings and on fixture presence
  • Provide input into Pets Choice internal innovation process resulting in the development of a customer specific sell in story for innovation and successfully implementation in line with agreed distribution targets.

Essential Skills & Requirement

  • At least 2 year’ experience in a Category Manager role within a FMCG business record of generating results
  • Experience of working proficiently with external data such as Kantar, IRI and Retailer own data
  • Eligibility to work in the UK on a permanent basis
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • A flexible, enthusiastic, and committed attitude
  • Full UK and clean driving licence is essential


Salary dependent on experience.

Holiday entitlement is 23 days pa plus statutory bank holidays (3 days to be used during the Christmas period).

Company pension scheme will also be available after qualifying period. 

Core working hours are 8.30 – 5.00 with half hour for lunch, however due to the nature of the role some out of hours working will be required.
